I am forking existing forum software in order to adapt it to my own needs for security, removing connections with external organizations such as OpenID and Google; reducing the types of databases to just PostgreSQL; limiting the web server types to only those which are simple to use and highly secure.
I will start implementing the software soon. It is based upon mwForum, which now appears to no longer be under development or offer support. According to the requirements from the existing software, I am required to, and happy to, change the name. My version will now be called IreneForum, which is a dedication to my grandmother on my father's side of the family whose name was Irene. She passed away from a rare cancer when I was a small child.
I will add links here once I get it installed. I also have a development copy up on GitHub. IreneForum. Feel free to look at it and any help would be appreciated, including just good advice.
There is a lot of busy work that needs to be done. The software works fine right now. I need to study it in detail. I do not have any database experience other than PostgreSQL, so removing the bits that are just there to support MySQL is actually going to be a chore for me and help would be great! I also need to rename all of the little things such as variables reflecting the mwf name and rename modules such as MwfMain.pm to something new like IreneMain.pm? Also, any work I do not derive from the existing software will be licensed ISC. This is even more Open Source than BSD or the ugly GPL family of crap that is more intended to restrict a full and free use of Open Source code in any way possible. If you can't sell your or someone else's work, it just isn't free software. It's restricted. That's evil, IMHO.
PLEASE. Help me find or create some icons that are bigger than the size of a split pea! The horrible appearance and total lack of care about people with poor eyesight has offended me from the moment I started using this software years ago. Dammit, I am finally getting into that group of people that can't see well! Getting old sucks! I had a stent put in. I feel better. Better enough to get my full hip replacement! Grr!
